With restrictions on the number of people you can see set to last for months, maybe it’s time to get yourself some new plant friends.

And if you need some inspiration, Instagram is a good place to look.

Filled with home inspo, people on the social media site love to add some greenery.

If you want to fit in with the latest trends, HomeHow.co.uk has put together some research around the most Instagrammed house plants.

Looking at the number of posts with plant related hashtags last week, they found that the classic cactus came out on top, which is probably because we’re not very good at remembering to get the watering can out.

The top 10 most popular plants on Instagram

1. Cactus

Cacti come in lots of shapes, sizes and types so you should be able to find one which fits the space you have in mind.

Of course, they’re known to be able to hold liquid so you don’t need water too often – but they do need to be somewhere bright.

2. Hoya

The Hoya plant needs light watering and some bright but indirect light. It’s a great plant to have in your bathroom as Hoya plants love humidity.

3. Monstera

Known for their huge waxy leaves, monstera plants need light watering and some indirect light so it’s easy to take care of.

4. Philodendron

The Philodendron is an unusual plant with leaves that separate into fingers and a spiral growth pattern.

5. Ferns

The fern term covers a lot of different plants but they all like lots of water, so it’s important not to let them dry out.

6. Anthurium

This red sections might look like flowers but they are actually brightly coloured leaves. The spike in the middle is the flower.

7. Pothos

Also known as Devil’s Ivy, this plant is versatile and easy to care for. It likes most light conditions and needs infrequent watering.

8. Peperomia

There are 2,500 species of peperomia so expect to see them in lots of different shapes and colours.

9. Rubber tree

This plant was once used to make rubber, hence the name. It likes regular misting and a medium light level.

10. Fiddle leaf fig

This evergreen tree has air purifying properties and makes an excellent focal point in any room.

Outside the top 10, popular plants included the snake, Chinese evergreen, spider, peace lily, ZZ plant, Madagascar dragon tree and coffee plant.

Surprisingly, the aloe vera, string of pearls and dracaena fragans came out at the bottom of the list of 20 plants
