After a chaotic first half of the year, the large majority of UK residents are in dire need of a holiday.
But as the coronavirus pandemic continues to cause future uncertainties – many people are holding off booking flights and all-inclusive hotels this year in fear of looming cancellations.
But there are ways to bring your holiday home if you don’t fancy chancing a booking.
From outdoor cinema weekends to put a special spin on binge-watching your favourite Netflix series to trampoline sleepovers for the children and exotic garden bar gatherings – there are plenty of ideas to test out.
We scoured social media to find some of the best staycation ideas for 2020 – here’s what we found:
Outdoor cinema night
Transform your garden, backyard or balcony into an outdoor cinema like @joe_sugg did for his girlfriend on TikTok.
In the caption of the video, he wrote: “Building a DIY outdoor cinema as a surprise.”
In the short clip, Joe sets up wire extensions for a projector, throws a bed sheet over a balcony divider, adds furry beanbags and blankets along with some decorative lanterns to create a romantic atmosphere.
You can purchase your own outdoor cinema projector from online retailers like Amazon for around £60.
If you have a trampoline in your back garden, give it a quick makeover to transform it into quirky space to camp.
TikTok user @arianalee99 shared a video of her trampoline sleepover.
The short video shows the trampoline safety nets being covered with material then fairy lights are added.
The middle of the trampoline is then filled with blankets, pillows and cuddly toys and a laptop is set up so the sleepover attendees can watch Netflix outside.
A popular clip on the popular video sharing platform, it received more than 2.6 million likes.
Garden bar transformation
Give your garden an upgrade by adding a bar area.
If you’re a fan of DIY, have a go at building a bar yourself out of old wooden pallets.
If DIY isn’t for you – dedicate a cocktail corner in your outdoor area and add a table, a couple of stools along with lanterns and fairy lights to create the sort of outdoor lightening you’d expect on a square on holiday.
Set up your favourite bottles on the side or – if your budget will allow – you can get spirit bottle dispensers for around £20.
In the evening, bring out blankets to cosy up under as you enjoy a drink.
DIY spa day
TikTok user @juliestory transformed her bathroom into a spa haven without spending any money at all.
In a clip shared with her 233.2k followers, Julie reveals how she did it.
She uses everyday household and garden items that she found lying around her home – including glass vases, sand, candles, old metal trays, earrings and salsa jars to kit her bathroom out to look like a spa.
Head to your nearest bargain store for budget-friendly face masks, foot masks, hair masks, body oils and nail kits and give yourself a much deserved pamper session from the comfort of your own bathroom.
