While New York City real estate listings are constantly teeming with luxury apartments and penthouses, it’s not too often that you come upon the once home of a member of The Beatles. Today, John Lennon’s former 4,000-square-foot NYC penthouse has hit the market for $5.5 million and it’s where some of the musician’s most iconic moments took place.

Located at the top of the exclusive Southgate complex at 434 East 52nd Street, the apartment spans three floors and includes an enormous 2,000-square-foot wraparound terrace that can be accessed from every room on the main floor. Not to mention, that the apartment as a whole delivers stunning panoramic views of the city— and even in the days before Instagram, Lennon knew a good backdrop when he saw one.

According to the listing, this apartment is where Lennon’s infamous black-and-white “New York City” photos were taken and later published in Andy Warhol’s Interview magazine in 1974. This is also where Lennon was living when he famously claimed he saw a UFO.

But even besides the legendary musician’s experiences there, the apartment’s style makes it a standout home on its own. The entry level offers an elegant living room with high ceilings, a wood burning fireplace, and gorgeous inlaid hardwood flooring. Also on that levels is the kitchen, which nods to the style of French countryside, but is complemented with top-of-the-line appliances, ample counter space, and storage room. The impressive dining room (which can seat up to 20), the library/media room, and a spacious bedroom and bathroom live on this floor as well.

Lastly, the lower level of the home is its own apartment with a living room, kitchen, full bathroom and one bedroom. It can be accessed from via stairs in the penthouse, but also from a separate entrance.

Renowned architect Emery Roth designed the apartment building, which is located off a quiet and discreet cul-de-sac in between Midtown East and the Upper East Side. Lauren Cangiano and Alisha Lloyd-Hudson of Brown Harris Stevens hold the listing, which you can view here.
