Solano County legalized home food pop-ups. But 6 months later, chefs still can’t sell

When Solano County approved a new California law that would legalize home-based kitchen operations in April, it seemed like Cheska Kistner’s plans to open a restaurant in her Benicia home would finally come to fruition. The measure, California’s AB626, allows for what are known as microenterprise food businesses, which Alameda County also made inroads toward legalizing Monday. But no Bay Area county has yet fully implemented the 2018 law, leaving entrepreneurs like Kistner in limbo.

Under AB626, cooks can legally sell up to 30 meals a day or 60 per week from their homes when their counties opt in and they have received a permit; their annual gross sales are capped at $50,000. The law has been implemented in only one county so far, Riverside. In Alameda County, many home kitchen operations have proliferated during the pandemic without the option to get proper permitting, leading to the health department cracking

The Full Suburban: Classy decor or murder house for Halloween?

Hang on to your witch hats, everyone, because we’re midway through October, and the Ditto party train is full speed ahead until spring.

I love fall, but with its advent is ushered in a relentless eight months straight of holidays and birthdays in our family with their accompanying decorations, gifts and expectations.

I feel weary just thinking about it. First, there’s Halloween, then two birthdays less than a week later. Thanksgiving rolls around with its do-gooding and overeating, and then we celebrate our anniversary, Christmas, New Year’s and a birthday all in the span of about two weeks.

From there, it’s a steady march of almost biweekly celebrations: Valentine’s Day, birthday, St. Patrick’s Day, birthday, Easter, birthday, birthday. By the time June rolls around, I am leaping with joy on the graves of holiday decorations past relishing the coming four months with relatively little to celebrate. That sounds bad; I

[PHOTOS] Uhuru leads Kenyans in national prayers at State House

President Uhuru Kenyatta led the country in marking the beginning of the National Prayer weekend at State House, Nairobi, on Saturday.

This will be the second national prayer event in the country since the virus struck the nation on March 13.

During the socially distanced event, religious leaders delivered scripture readings, offered sermons and led in thematic intercessory prayers covering thanksgiving, repentance and forgiveness, national healing and restoration, national aspirations, and leadership and family.

Citam presiding Bishop David Oginde compared Kenya to the ship Jonah in the Bible had boarded as he tried to avoid his Godsent mission.

“Kenya is a ship that is facing huge storms. We are facing a violent storm, the president has called on us to call upon our God, so He may hear us so we do not perish. Every Kenyan should call on his God,” he said.

Bishop Alfred Rotich asked everyone in

Color is the most defining design element in a room. Colors can make a room appear cold and institutional or warm and inviting. (Shutterstock)

Color is the most defining design element in a room. Colors can make a room appear cold and institutional or warm and inviting. Choosing colors for your rooms may be a personal choice, but one should also consider how the room will be perceived by others, whether they are visitors or cohabitants.

The mood of a room should be a main factor when selecting colors. Keep in mind that your lighting, including natural sources of light, will affect the way a room is seen.

Sometimes, someone will call me about a wall color in a project they have seen of mine in a magazine, newspaper or online. While I always like to share resources and information, I always caution that depending on where you live, the
