An Ocean County man faces attempted murder and other charges in the shooting of a 4-year-old girl Tuesday as she sat outside her Asbury Park home with her twin sister and other family members, authorities said Thursday.
Sciaire N. Jackson, 27, of Lakewood, was arrested and charged with first-degree attempted murder, second-degree aggravated assault and weapons charges in the wounding of the child on Boston Way, according to Monmouth County Prosecutor Christopher J. Gramiccioni.
The girl was shot about 1:35 p.m. in the residential neighborhood, Gramiccioni said.
Jackson is accused of riding up on a bicycle and firing a handgun several times at people outside an apartment. A second person, who has not been found by police, returned fire at Jackson, the prosecutor said. Authorities believe one of Jackson’s bullets struck the girl in the exchange of gunfire.
“The child was just playing outside and was not the intended target,” Gramiccioni said in a statement.
The child was shot in the upper thigh area and suffered a broken femur. Gramiccioni said doctors have described her injury as serious but not life-threatening.
Anyone with information about the shooting is asked to call Detective William Anton of the Monmouth County Prosecutor’s Office at 1-800-533-7443 or Asbury Park Police Detective Dillon Gourley at 1-732-774-1300.
Jackson faces up to 20 years in prison if convicted of the attempted murder charge, Gramiccioni said.
