Contemporary Design Buffs Will Love The New W Hotel In Ibiza. Here’s Why

Bold and beautiful, brand-new W Ibiza overlooks palm-fringed, sun-kissed Santa Eulalia beach on the northeastern coast of Ibiza, Spain. Best known as a white-hot magnet for clubbers and international jetsetters, Ibiza is a match made in heaven for Marriott’s most upbeat brand, W Hotels. Situated in the more laid-back, bohemian Santa Eulalia, away from the frenzy of Ibiza Town and banging basslines of Playa d’en Bossa or San Antonio, W Ibiza offers the best of both worlds, inviting guests to party all night or disconnect completely—or enjoy a mix of the two.

With its contemporary, colorful design, W Ibiza embodies the spirit of the island, in all its uninhibited glory. Designed by the Amsterdam-based Baranowitz + Kronenberg studio, the lively ambiance of the hotel celebrates the vibrancy of the Mediterranean playground it inhabits. Throughout the property, bright splashes of color are combined with sun and shade to create a refreshingly simple, yet vivacious feel.

“It was important to us to capture the spirit of Ibiza within this project,” said Alon Baranowitz and Irene Kronenberg, Cofounders of Baranowitz + Kronenberg. “Laid back, colorful, simple, transparent, engaging and letting the sun shine in, are notions which flow throughout the public and private spaces of the hotel”.

Stepping into W Ibiza, guests first walk through a crystal installation that creates a “forest” of light directing them into the lobby—or W Lounge—of the hotel. Metallic desks, reminiscent of drops of water, create a calm, peaceful ambiance, while the sinuous metal embroidery patterns that cover the ceiling are a reference to the lacing techniques used by Ibizan artisans.

The walls of the W Lounge are covered in colors and textures inspired by the iconic Ibiza sunset. Made using waved cord—another age-old local craft—a multitude of lines navigate the surface, extending from brown to dark blue, to illustrate the levels of the sea.

Next up, the Bridge Bar is decorated in brightly colored Balearic textiles, creating the feel of an Ibizan village in which guests are invited to relax over a drink.

The 162 guest rooms sport a mix of natural and locally manufactured materials, avant-garde décor and a color palette ranging from golden sand to deep blue. Bespoke touches include designs by Spanish artist Marina Gonzalez Eme, who was brought on board to incorporate the myths and fables of the island into the in-room experience, creating wall murals, and embroidered pillow designs embodying Tanit, warrior goddess and protector of Ibiza. The colorful Jackson Pollock-inspired headboards symbolize the island’s free spirit, while the deep-blue curtains reflect the tone of the sparkling Mediterranean Sea just outside.

From the WET Deck and pool, guests on their balconies are served a reflection of the shape of the building, while those at pool level can enjoy the contrasting perspectives of the hotel’s various canopies, from yellow to blue—a nod to the natural shades of the Ibizan sunset, mountains and sea.

W Ibiza features two restaurants, three bars and a spa. Onsite La Llama restaurants serves dishes of flame-grilled meat and fresh seafood, while Chiringuito Blue, set on the white powder beach outside, specializes in creations based on fresh local fish and vegetables by Israeli celebrity chef Haim Cohen. Vegetarian Ve Café delivers a stylish, light-filled interior, stunning views, and a menu focused on healthy, fresh bowls. Last but not least, the 4,000 square foot AWAY Spa boasts six private treatment rooms and a gym.

W Ibiza opened in Santa Eulalia in July 2020.
